Examining the gas geopolitics of the region, identifying the obstacles to Iran’s presence in the regional gas market, and proposing practical solutions to overcome these obstacles
Abstract
Gas is one of Iran’s key leverage points in energy geopolitics. However, the gas market is not without competition, and some of Iran’s neighboring countries, such as Turkey, are seeking to bypass Iran in the regional gas market. Additionally, LNG is expected to hold a significant position in the future gas market, yet Iran currently has no presence in this sector. Therefore, for the Islamic Republic of Iran to maintain its presence in the gas and LNG markets, it must develop strategies both domestically (to manage consumption patterns) and internationally (for sales, transit, swap, and even gas purchases).
