The Challenges of Industrialization in Iran: Why Has Industrial Policy Not Been Successful in the country?

The 59th Institutional Insight Meeting on ‘Pathology of Iran’s Industrial Development’ Was Held at KHANA

Spokesperson: Mr. Saber Mirzaei, Deputy for Research at the Center for Cooperation, Transformation, and Progress of the Presidency, and Mr. Reza Mousaei, Secretary of the Strategic Studies Office for Production Growth and Economic Expert

A summary of Mr. Saber Mirzaei’s  remarks:

1.Fundamental economic reforms are essential, and excessive support for industries, such as the automotive sector, has been detrimental

2.Our industrial policy should aim to attract investors rather than merely consume capital; countries like Turkey and China have progressed by attracting foreign investment

3. Focusing on regional markets, identifying industrial advantages, expanding exports, and strategic territorial planning are essential measures for industrial development

4.The excessive concentration of resources in Tehran has hindered sustainable development, and a balanced distribution of industrial advantages is necessary

A summery of Mr. Reza Mousaei’s remarks:

1.The gap between developed and developing countries has led governments to adopt policies to bridge this gap.

2.The lack of necessary dynamism in the country’s industrial development policies, absence of institutional requirements in industrial development strategies, barriers in technology, research and development, and technological cooperation, among others, are factors preventing industrial development in our country.
