Explaining the importance of copper in sustainable development and examining the competition between China and the U.S. in Africa’s copper belt and their investments in the region
Abstract
Critical minerals such as cobalt, lithium, and copper play a significant role in the global economy and defense industries. Copper, as one of the key elements in industries based on sustainable development, has gained significant importance in recent decades. The Copper Belt region in Africa is one of the largest copper reserves in the world, which has led economic powers to pay special attention to this area. On the other hand, China has made substantial investments in this region in recent years, becoming the dominant player in the area. To reduce China’s dominance over this supply chain, projects like the Atlantic Lobito Railway in Africa, supported by the United States and the European Union, are being developed.
