Abstract

Handicraft, as an art intertwined with industry, possess both aesthetic and economic dimensions. Handicraft products not only reflect Iranian identity and culture but are also significant industries in terms of employment and income generation. Additionally, handicrafts can be considered an important factor in improving the country’s balance of payments. It can be stated that the key to the survival and future vitality of countries in the process of globalization lies in a qualitative and strategic approach to handicrafts. The outcome of globalization is the movement toward the integration of human life, and what can keep authenticity and ethnic identities alive and dynamic in this space is deepening local and regional art and culture with an economic and livelihood-oriented approach.

Iranian handicrafts are a unique cultural and economic asset, created with local materials and skilled craftsmanship. Despite their high value and potential to boost employment and exports, they face challenges such as limited presence in international markets, poor packaging, competition from cheap foreign imitations, and high production costs. While global handicraft exports near $300 billion, Iran’s share remains very small compared to countries like China and India. Handicrafts hold deep cultural significance and can promote tourism and cultural exchange, but they need better national planning and support to thrive economically and preserve this important heritage.

Challenges in Handicrafts area

Challenges include the neglect of local arts, lack of effective advertising, inconsistencies in education, market difficulties, tough conditions in specific crafts, and declining product quality. Solutions involve establishing handicraft clusters, supporting artists, revising educational goals, forming strong associations, focusing on design, and preserving artistic values. Establishing handicraft clusters, providing special support to artists and professionals, and forming strong associations and guilds are practical solutions that can effectively address these challenges.
