From the Mediterranean to the Caspian: The Strategic Link between the David Corridor and the Zangazur Corridor

The Strategic Link between the David Corridor and the Zangazur Corridor

Abstract

Following recent regional developments, two geopolitical corridors, the “David Corridor” and the “Zangazur Corridor,” have attracted significant attention from media and political analysts. Although these corridors are located in different geographical regions (the Middle East and the South Caucasus) and seemingly pursue different objectives, they are strategically and geopolitically closely linked and align with the interests of Western powers, particularly NATO and the Israeli regime.

The David Corridor, as part of Israel’s expansionist strategy, is designed to create a land route from the occupied Golan Heights to Iraq’s Kurdistan Region. This route facilitates Israel’s direct access to Kurdish-controlled areas in northern Syria and Iraq and strengthens its influence in the Middle East.

On the other hand, the Zangazur Corridor, which passes through Armenian territory, is not only crucial for connecting Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan and Turkey but is also defined within NATO’s broader plans to strengthen Western presence in the South Caucasus and establish a transcontinental link between Asia and Europe.

Strategic Objectives of the David Corridor

The David Corridor aims to expand Israel’s influence by linking the occupied Golan Heights to Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, strengthening ties with Kurdish groups, pressuring Iran, enabling intelligence and military operations, and facilitating access to regional energy and markets.

The Importance of the Zangazur Corridor and NATO’s Role

The Zangazur Corridor, supported by NATO and Western powers, connects Azerbaijan to Turkey, strengthens Baku-Ankara ties, expands Western influence in the South Caucasus, and provides an alternative land route bypassing Iran, Russia, and China. Israel also leverages it to circumvent geopolitical constraints and pressure Iran.

Strategic Linkage of the David and Zangazur Corridors

The David and Zangazur Corridors are strategically linked, with Azerbaijan-Israel cooperation enabling a connected axis from the Mediterranean to the Caspian. Supported by NATO and Turkey, this axis strengthens Israel’s influence and serves to contain Iran.

Geopolitical Implications for Iran

The David and Zangazur Corridors could facilitate Israeli intelligence and military operations against Iran, strengthen Azerbaijan-Turkey-Israel ties, increase NATO’s military presence near Iran’s borders, and provide faster, cheaper access for potential attacks or espionage, bypassing traditional diplomatic constraints.
