The activation of the Snapback Mechanism by European states was deemed illegitimate by Iran, Russia, and China. They argued that parties who themselves violated the JCPOA cannot lawfully benefit from its enforcement mechanisms. Despite Iran’s consistent compliance (as verified by the IAEA), the U.S. withdrawal and renewed sanctions severely undermined the agreement, making Europe’s subsequent action legally questionable.

Thus, the reimposition of UN Sanctions has transformed the Snapback Mechanism into a tool that undermines human rights, requiring urgent international attention.
