A review of the current status of the mining industry in the country and the design of a model for digital transformation and AI development in Iran’s mining sector
In the modern era, digital transformation is recognized as a key driver of economic growth and industrial productivity. Artificial intelligence, as one of the most innovative technologies, plays a prominent role in improving industrial processes and enhancing companies’ competitive capabilities. Considering the importance of the mining sector in national economies, the application of AI in this field can increase production, reduce costs, and preserve the environment. With its rich mineral resources, Iran has a unique opportunity to develop advanced technologies, and the activation and implementation of AI in its mines represents a fundamental step toward achieving sustainable development and competitive advancement.
Status of Artificial Intelligence in the Mining Industry
AI in mining enhances efficiency, increases operations by 10–20%, reduces emissions by 15–30%, and drives global digitalization; the sector’s AI market is growing at 10% annually.
Applications of Artificial Intelligence in the Mining Industry
The following outlines some of the most important applications of artificial intelligence in the mining and mineral industries:
- AI in Mineral Exploration
AI speeds up exploration, improves accuracy, and reduces costs; it is an accessible starting point for digital transformation due to data-driven processes and existing national institutions.
- AI in Mining Extraction:
AI optimizes drilling, automates fleets, and enables predictive maintenance, but adoption is hindered by old machinery, import restrictions, and poor communication infrastructure.
- AI in Processing
AI enhances production, efficiency, and reduces energy use and waste, though high infrastructure costs, expensive equipment, cybersecurity risks, and complex certifications limit widespread implementation.
Key Recommendations for Developing and Implementing Artificial Intelligence in Iran’s Mining Sector
Based on the report’s content and research team analyses from reports, interviews, and other sources, the following recommendations are proposed to develop and implement AI in the country’s mining sector:
- Focus support on the exploration sector as the primary area for mining industry development.
- Governmental institutions influencing the corporate innovation system should support the establishment of AI operators in mineral exploration under large company frameworks.
- Revise laws and regulations that restrict the import of modern mining machinery capable of integrating AI technologies.
