Introduction to Feminist Schools of Thought, Feminism in Iran, and Its Characteristics
Abstract
Feminism is a social movement that emerged in the 19th century in the Western world with the aim of advocating for women’s rights in opposition to patriarchal cultural and societal norms. Feminism encompasses various schools of thought, but certain core principles are shared across all these schools, such as the rejection of gender distinctions, the opposition to discrimination and historical oppression, the pursuit of equality, the acknowledgment of the early matriarchal societies, and its inherently protest-driven nature.
In Iran, the feminist movement does not have a long historical background compared to the West, but in recent years, feminist ideas and beliefs have become much more visible and prominent than before. It is important to recognize that these feminist ideologies are emerging within the context of Iranian society, and their relationship with Islam, as well as concepts like family and motherhood, must be considered.
