Review and analysis of Iran’s situation and its competitors in various editions of the Asian Games, description of Iran’s status for participation in the 2026 Asian Games, and providing recommendations
Abstract
The 20th edition of the Asian Games will be held in 2026 in Nagoya, Japan. The Iranian sports delegation is preparing to achieve a better standing compared to the previous games. To ensure success and improve their ranking, officials from the Ministry of Sports and the National Olympic Committee have held several meetings with various federations. However, a clear and definite plan for Iran’s participation in these games has not yet been finalized. Given the emphasis by sports officials on improving Iran’s performance compared to previous editions, it is necessary to conduct an analysis of Iran’s medal achievements in past games. According to the Secretary-General of the National Olympic Committee, the expectation of the Ministry of Sports and Youth is to improve Iran’s ranking compared to the previous edition and to win at least 40 gold medals. This statement has faced criticism, and the factors that could contribute to its success in the medium term are being examined.
Critics’ Reasons Against This Claim and Factors for Medium-Term Success
To succeed in the medium term, timely funding, organized training camps, regular competition participation, better athlete support, updated equipment, and stable management are essential.
Iran’s Performance in Various Editions of the Asian Games
Iran’s budget for the Asian Games has increased compared to recent editions but is still lower than in 2006 and 2010. Over the last three Games, Iran’s gold medal count and overall ranking have declined. Compared to rising competitors, Iran’s situation is concerning, and without serious strategic improvements, its performance and ranking in future Asian Games may worsen.
Analysis of Iran’s Competitors
Among Iran’s main rivals for fourth place in the Asian Games, India, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Chinese Taipei are better positioned with strong medal potential. India has rapidly improved by investing in shooting, archery, and athletics. Kazakhstan shows strength in a wide range of sports, especially canoeing and boxing. Uzbekistan has significantly increased its gold medals through focus on combat and gymnastics sports and promoting youth sports culture. Chinese Taipei has advanced using modern technology and infrastructure, excelling in skating, boxing, and tennis, while also seeking to enhance its global sports standing for political reasons.
Assessment of Iran’s Position for Participation in the 2026 Asian Games
Iran needs stable management, timely funding, and clear plans to succeed in the 2026 Asian Games. Investment in technology and coordinated strategies is currently lacking.
Suggestions for Success in the 2026 Asian Games
To succeed in the 2026 Asian Games, Iran should establish a dedicated management team with a clear plan, ensure transparent budget communication, focus investments on a few key sports, and adopt modern technologies like AI to boost athlete performance.
